Clanbeat

Clanbeat is a self-directed learning solution that puts students at the heart of learning. It provides a personalised learning experience supported by the community with an emphasis on personal development and well-being.

EdTech Validation Lab 2020 The Netherlands startup Clanbeat

The problem

  • Students often do not take an active role in their learning (they lack motivation, an understanding of how they learn the best, and the ability to manage the learning experience) all of which have a negative effect on well-being.
  •  Universities lack time, personnel, resources, and data to support each individual student in the personalised learning process.

The solution

Worked out with educational psychology scientists and students – Clanbeat provides a positive cycle of planning, acting and reflecting to support the self-directed learning and well-being of students. It monitors how students feel, perform, and learn. Impact comes, in addition to developing positive habits and good relationships with themselves and their peers, also from reflecting the data back in the form of insights for improvement.

The end result is a solution that supports and motivates each student to nurture his or her passions, make connections between different learning experiences and design their own learning and processes in collaboration with others. During that process, Clanbeat’s machine learning algorithms are growing to offer personalised recommendations for better results and improved wellbeing along the learning journey.

Looking for

Student counsellors, tutors, mentors, well-being managers, student success teams, IT integrators, Heads of Innovation, Heads of School.

Enlight ed

The problem

Complex topics such as maths cannot be learned alone, but when students work on their homework, this time is for self-study. The question is if current study materials are supportive enough for students to progress by themselves when they get stuck with their homework, and how much time can a teacher spare to help them if they struggle.

The solution

Our AI-driven exercise practising platform turns exercise solving into a conversation. Our platform uses the mistakes students make to guide them by providing personalised feedback and asking follow-up questions. Teachers can with one click get an overview of engagement level and the exercises students struggle with. This insight enables teachers to focus their limited time and give students the right support during contact hours.

Intense

The problem

During the covid-19-crisis, educational institutions are forced to find solutions for online test-taking that prevent fraud. These solutions are often compromising the privacy of the student and creating a test environment that is uncomfortable for the student who is aware of the camera.

The solution

The solution Intense has found is less intrusive as it collects data on typing behaviour to determine who’s the person behind the keyboard. By collecting this data we can deduce a ‘digital fingerprint’ unique to each individual user without compromising the privacy of the student.

Looking for

We are looking for pilots where we can test our solution during online exams in the background to collect data and prove the added value and accuracy of our software in exchange for a less intrusive form of online proctoring.

Komensky

The problem

A lot of companies are having trouble finding employees in areas of expertise that are vital for the future, such as front- or back-end developers, data-analysts or online content creators. Meanwhile, there are starters experiencing difficulty finding a job in their field or one that fits their ambitions or needs.

The solution

We set up a solution where we break down these jobs into specific sets of skills. We teach students these skills sets through an online platform and active work experience. These skillsets transcend one specific job and by gaining insight into your own skills you’ll be able to work more agile. This way we don’t just teach you the one job, we give you the tools to adapt better in all your upcoming challenges in a rapidly changing work environment.

Nyurobeat

The problem

In light of COVID-19 educators worldwide were forced moving into a completely virtual environment, but by doing so they lost their visual-based estimation as made possible in a classroom environment (assessing frustration/stress by viewing facial expressions or body posture). As proven by interviewing with 30+ educators across the US, EU, and Israel, a major concern revolves around the scenario which learners willingly turns off their camera, thus obscuring their signs of a challenge with new materials.

The solution

Nyurobeat offerings support learners and educators, as one, by addressing their difficulties while transitioning towards remote synchronous education, with improved productivity and overall stress reduction. By relying on numerous non-visual cues (e.g. tone of voice, choice of words, engagement, etc.), to differentiate between positive and negative reactions, the following is achieved:

  • 100% confidentiality in communicating the feedback from students, thus relieving their associated stress;
  • Detection of frustration developed at the learner’s end, by experiencing a challenging lesson (especially relevant for STEM education);
  • Aggregation of results for the educator to review which percentile of the students are showing signs of difficulty.

Looking for

  1. Small pilot activity for a period of 1-3 months with a single classroom consisting of 1 educator and around 25 students to prove values;
  2. We are open to exploring co-development with institutes proficient in linguistics, and human behaviour.

Schoolyear

The problem

The enormous growth of digital exams is forcing educational institutions to think about expanding their capacity with the use of personal laptops or Bring Your Own Device. But how do you ensure you facilitate this in a scalable and user-friendly manner, without having to compromise on security or privacy?

The solution

Schoolyear makes large scale digital testing with Bring Your Own Device possible. The secure test environment supports all web-based test platforms and automatically prevents students from making print screens or using other sources (apps, documents, and webpages), without making screen or webcam recordings. A test can be set up in just 3 simple steps without IT-support.

Tranquiliti

The problem

Improving wellbeing at university is a complex challenge. For students, it can be hard to find the support that’s relevant to them, whether that’s online, at university, or in the local area.

For universities, it’s difficult to measure and understand wellbeing among students, and to develop policies and interventions that can improve wellbeing across campus.

Solving these two problems is key to creating happy and successful universities with positive wellbeing at their heart.

The solution

Tranquiliti’s service supports wellbeing at an individual and university level. Through our app, students answer questions about their wellbeing and life at university. With this information, we connect students to support that’s relevant to them, whether that’s online, at university, or in their local area. This ensures that students get the help that they need with their health and happiness.

The questions also help universities to measure student wellbeing and understand how it can be improved across campus. This is key to ensuring that the university’s policies and practices are built for happiness, and not just academic success.

UGuide

The problem

Measuring study progress is important, but has three problems. First, it creates a high administrative workload for teachers. Additionally, it’s difficult to gain a deep insight into the study process as most learning data is fragmented. Furthermore, it’s not clear which data is important. These problems mean that quality standards of the institute are not always met resulting in more drop-outs. This costs the institute more than 10.000,- euros per drop-out per year.

The solution

The UGuide learning analytics system gathers and analyses all learning data of the institute in one central dashboard. UGuide thus reduces workload and concurrently provides a deep insight into the study process to students, teachers and study counsellors.

For students, UGuide means more targeted learning and a lower probability to drop out. For teachers, it means less administrative work and better (contact)education. For example, UGuide shows the score on specific topics linked to study materials. This in order to provide insight into study progress and engagement. Additionally, it provides automatic actionable advice to all parties. However, UGuide can do more!

Pocket Didactiek

Pocket Didactiek consists of two apps; Pocket Teaching (Pocket Didactiek) for teachers and Pocket Learning (Pocket Leren) for students.

The problem

The last decades, there has been a shift in education towards increasing the self-dependence of students to make them ready for a ‘life long learning’.

To become efficient self-dependent learners, it is of importance that students acquire effective, evidence-based, learning strategies. Educational institutions have not yet fostered an environment enhancing these techniques. Studies show that the most ineffective techniques, such as re-reading and marking texts, are most used, while the most effective techniques, such as practice rehearsal and active learning, are least used.

The solution

Pocket Teaching aims to enhance the learning strategies of students and the teaching strategies of teachers. We do this by providing them with a database that synthesises hundreds of scientific research papers, which explains teaching and learning strategies in an easy, concrete manner. By bringing teaching and learning strategies together in the same learning tool, teachers, and students will eventually start to speak the same learning language.

For example, if a teacher tells students to use ‘practice rehearsal’, students can easily look it up. As coaches are far more effective in bringing across learning strategies than databases can, we integrated an ‘e-coach’ (i.e. chatbot) in the application. By doing so, the application makes learning support accessible, scalable and measurable.

Looking for

  • Educational institutes that want to empower teachers and students with evidence-based teaching and learning strategies;
  • Director/manager students affairs, product owners of student success centre, student dean etc.

BUKU

The problem

Universities of applied sciences are spending several million euros on their library. They facilitate their students to have access to all sources they need. Yet at the same time, only a small percentage of students use the library. So, universities don’t reach their goals with their libraries.

Imagine all students having unlimited access to all textbooks, study books, and other important sources, available always and everywhere on all devices. Together with BUKU, you can create this situation.

The solution

With our solution universities can reallocate the costs for libraries

EdTech Validation Lab 2020 The Netherlands startup BUKU

to the ideal situation that students have always and everywhere access to all studbooks, textbooks and important sources. The universities are liberated from expensive licenses that give very limited possibilities for students and universities. No more booklists necessary, no more students having to buy expensive books, no more students that don’t have the prescribed books available. And lecturers can use as many books and parts of books they want for their classes.

Looking for

We are looking for faculties of universities of applied sciences that want to do a pilot with us.
