Pocket Didactiek consists of two apps; Pocket Teaching (Pocket Didactiek) for teachers and Pocket Learning (Pocket Leren) for students.
The problem
The last decades, there has been a shift in education towards increasing the self-dependence of students to make them ready for a ‘life long learning’.
To become efficient self-dependent learners, it is of importance that students acquire effective, evidence-based, learning strategies. Educational institutions have not yet fostered an environment enhancing these techniques. Studies show that the most ineffective techniques, such as re-reading and marking texts, are most used, while the most effective techniques, such as practice rehearsal and active learning, are least used.
The solution
Pocket Teaching aims to enhance the learning strategies of students and the teaching strategies of teachers. We do this by providing them with a database that synthesises hundreds of scientific research papers, which explains teaching and learning strategies in an easy, concrete manner. By bringing teaching and learning strategies together in the same learning tool, teachers, and students will eventually start to speak the same learning language.
For example, if a teacher tells students to use ‘practice rehearsal’, students can easily look it up. As coaches are far more effective in bringing across learning strategies than databases can, we integrated an ‘e-coach’ (i.e. chatbot) in the application. By doing so, the application makes learning support accessible, scalable and measurable.
